Evelyn was a resident of Rockville Centre her entire life. She was born on November 28, 1918 at her family home on Locust Ave. She was the third of four children including brothers Raymond Schlegelmilch (Helen), Paul Schlegelmilch (Shirley) and Richard Schlegelmilch (Dorothy). She and Larry Sr. lived on Muirfield Rd and raised three children, Lawrence McAteer Jr. (Carol), John Raymond McAteer (Donna) and Eileen Tolbert (Dale). Evelyn is survived also by her grandchildren Timothy McAteer, Michael McAteer (Jennifer), Jennifer Gottlieb, John McAteer (Liz), Thomas McAteer (Sarah), Roger Lee Tolbert (Amanda) and Julie Eve Hollingshead (Jason). Evelyn and her husband Larry were married 39 years until his passing in 1979. Larry Sr. owned a business in town, Larry McAteer & Sons, and Evelyn was very involved in helping him. Larry Sr. was one of the founding members of Floodlight Rescue Co. #1. Evelyn and Larry had many friends in the Rockville Centre Fire Department. It was a huge part of their social life. She made time to care for her grandchildren, take trips with her husband and she was an active Eastern Star. She also volunteered at South Nassau Communities Hospital, worked the polls for elections and volunteered her time at the Church of the Ascension in the area of fundraising,(working in the shop attached to the church). She loved to sell handmade Christmas items during the Christmas Bazaars, and in later years she cared for young children in their homes making it possible for young moms to go out to work. The children called her Nanny, just as her grandchildren did.
Evelyn resided at Maple Pointe Assisted Living where they all said she was so sweet.
