Dr. Stratos G Kantounis, MD, FACS – on August 6, 2021, after a brief illness (not Covid related).
Stratos Kantounis was born in Brooklyn, NY to Greek Immigrant Parents on December 2, 1931. He lived in Brooklyn through his early 20s, & received his Bachelor of Science degree at CCNY, where he met the love of his life, Joanie - to whom he was married for 61 years until her passing in 2018. Stratos went-on to medical school at SUNY Downstate, & then completed his Internship & Residencies at Bellevue Hospital in NYC & then North Shore University Hospital, In Manhasset, NY.
Stratos joined the Army & was stationed in Livorno, Italy, at Camp Darby, Italy, from 1964 - 1967, where he served as Chief of Surgery at the hospital there. He & his young family spent their time there together happily immersed in Italian culture, enjoying travel throughout Italy & much of Europe. Upon Stratos’ return to the States, he began his civilian career as a General Surgeon with the Shell Surgical Group, located in Freeport, NY. Dr. Kantounis eventually started his own practice in Rockville Centre, NY, & spent his entire 50+ year tenure on staff at South Nassau Communities Hospital, serving as a preeminent Surgeon, Chief of Surgery, & Teacher of Surgical Residents - until 2020. Above all else, Stratos’ love of the art of surgery & his devotion for helping others, drove him throughout his entire adult life.
A Rockville Centre resident since 1972, Dr. Kantounis also spent much of his time on Cape Cod, in the Adirondacks, & made several return trips to Italy with his family. His passion for art & music also played a very big part in his life.
